Rôles de danse is a connected, participatory, and playful dance experience in which each participant embodies one of around fifteen roles. These roles draw from the pre-choreographic material of the ICK dance company, led by Pieter C. Scholten and Emio Greco. Each role places the participant in a specific physical and cognitive state, preparing them to achieve their goal within the choreographic game. The experience is designed for a wide variety of people, encouraging diversity in each session and fostering meaningful connections. Throughout the experience, each participant is guided by a voice. A dialogue gradually forms between this voice and the participant’s body. The voice, controlled by an AI, takes into account behavioral elements and relational dynamics to ensure the relevance of the instructions.
Each player has the opportunity to embody their role during a short warm-up phase. Following this, each player is assigned a goal related to their role. The diversity of goals and roles creates multiple encounters and scenarios. During the session, spectators try to guess who is playing which role among the group of participants. The identities are revealed at the end of the session. In subsequent sessions, spectators and players swap roles in turn.
Rôles de danse thus offers a participatory and social experience in which the roles of participants are expressed through their gestures, postures, and behaviors. Far from hindering interaction, the diversity of roles and subjectivities leads to an array of simple or complex relational situations. In this way, Rôles de danse develops an aesthetic of relationship unique to dance. Each session generates singular moments that invite participants to play again, discovering new facets of the experience and exploring fresh scenarios.
