Situated Media Workshop

Situated Media Workshop
Connected experiences in public spaces

This workshop offers a way to shape space using the Sonospheres mobile app. This tool enables the creation of connected experiences in public spaces through a mobile interface. The experience is created in situ, using a mobile app and its geolocation features. The app allows the step-by-step creation of a location-based experience by generating sounds and visuals and editing their triggering conditions (geolocation, thematic links, behavior, etc.). The experience can be linear or not. The management of sound layers allows for the creation of immersive environments. The workshop takes place on site, during a walk-through, and allows for the creation of various types of experiences: drift, investigation, sensory journey, fiction, collection, and more.

What is a situated media?

Smartphones, which appeared in the 2000s, equipped digital media with new abilities to interact with their environment through multiple sensors (geographical position, behaviors, proximity to other devices, etc.). By exploiting these functionalities, the media can adapt to specific contexts and manifest themselves through the user’s bodily experience.

The evolution of digital technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, biometric sensors, and ad-hoc networks, has given rise to an ambient media, closely connected to the tangible world, to the point where its immaterial nature is almost forgotten. This "situated media" becomes a key element in shaping space and organizing the activities that take place within it.
